When I was younger I thought only the best books got published. I ultimately learned that in reality what gets published is whatever someone thinks will sell, and that it's not necessarily the same thing. Publishers absolutely do prefer good, original books... but if it's good and original and too hard to market, they'll pick easy to market trash over the good original book any day of the week.
