Chapter 2 says they prefer worlds with only simple life. Just the early stage single cell organisms because they are easier to terraform.

That being the case would it not make more sense to hire a microbiologist who studies single celled organisms? Biologists, by definition, work with more complex systems. If all she studies is single celled organisms she is a microbiologist. To be a xenobiologist she would need to study more complex systems.
