Iron Man didnt start with "The first installment of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe" and then spend half the movie setting up Thor, it just advertised as Ironman, and then told a story about Ironman.
And it was simple, entertaining, and easy to follow. Also, the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is a good actor doesn't hurt.
On the other hand the DC Justice League series made a Justice League movie, hastily skirting over character origin stories...
It could've worked, if they tweaked the setup. Avengers was interesting even though I didn't see any of the other movies. The characters were all distinct and easy to tell apart. Me(Hawkeye was the most boring, though.) Each of them were introduced to the movie in an interesting way. Hawkeye was introduced with Nick Fury, and when he was taken over, he proved a threat. Black Widow was being interrogated (which she referred to as "working"). Bruce was a Doctor in rural India, I think? Captain America was introduced in a boxing gym, and the way he acted showed that he was down-to-earth. Meanwhile, Tony Stark was in his penthouse. And Thor came in when he hijacked the plane that they were carrying Loki on.
Meanwhile, each character in Justice League was introduced through...talking. Well, wonder woman did save a bank, but still. And D.C.'s greatest hits are all solo movies.
Paolini, trying to mimic this, skipped straight to the end without doing the work required to lead up to it.
And now he's on the hook for something else. (And we all know how Book Five went.)
