Honestly you could probably make a pretty good CRPG based on Inheritance. You can have the canon path be the one where your Eragon & Saphira (I'm imagining a duo character creation system like in Divinity: Original Sin where you get to choose what color dragon Saphira is, change her name/gender/skill specializations and same for Eragon) fails a lot of important skill checks and makes some poor decisions. And thus super fans can get the power fantasy of being "better" at defeating the Empire than Eragon and the precious canon gets respected too. Plus there'd be a lot of opportunity to expand side characters.
