The overarching problem is that his protagonists don't have a consistent character. Murtagh reacts the same as Eragon would in this circumstance, although Murtagh doesn't have the same connection. I could buy that he's mad about Galby being victorious there, but there's no reason to think that the Riders would be great, especially when the only living examples are Eragon, who was an asshole to him, and Oromis, who he was pissed at for not showing himself earlier.
