Yeah... I've been seeking out and reading found family stories for a long time, it's my favourite sub-genre within any genre of story

On a related note, I think you're really going to like one of my upcoming novels. :)

To Sleep is not a found family story, in any sense of the term. They're not a family. They're barely even friends. At best they are reluctant coworkers.

Note that they're really not nice to each other. Sparrow keeps bullying Dr Bollywood, Falconi and Asian Stereotype are mutually horrible to each other, Greg is an utter asshole to everyone with his stupid insults, etc. It's the same problem we had with Eragon and Saphira: they just aren't portrayed as being such close friends that they can get away with constantly insulting each other because they love and trust each other just that much. Instead they just come off as a bunch of complete dicks.

A good writer could definitely make "found family on board an interstellar transport vessel" work, regardless of the other elements of the story

Oh yeah, I mean that's exactly what Firefly was, and it's painfully obvious Paolini was trying to write a blatant imitation of that right down to the roughish captain with flexible morals who would nevertheless do anything to protect his crew. Profiting off a bunch of refugees by giving them transport is right out of an episode of the show. Falconi even kinda looks like Mal Reynolds.
