When I heard that he would leave Alagaesia and never return, I thought that meant that he would be going to the other continent. Not that he would just be going beyond the Eastern border. It seems a bit cheap to me.

More of Paolini's wussing out. To take it the whole way he should have had Ergy leave the entire continent, in a place where he can't be contacted for whatever reason, never to even hear from his friends again. But nope, just have him stay in shouting distance and thereby remove any real sense of tragedy there might have been.
