Rules of the Comm.

Here at AntiShurtugal Reborn, we have a few basic rules which all posters and commenters are expected to follow. Failure to abide by the rules will net you a warning. If you choose to ignore the warning, continue to violate the rules or argue with the mods, you will be banned. We really don't want to have to do that, so please don't oblige us to.

1. No personal attacks. It's fine to disagree with other members, but you are expected to do so in a respectful manner. Name-calling, put-downs and other insults are not acceptable. Likewise, in a spork you do not personally attack the author. "Paolini is a terrible writer and here's why" is fine. "Paolini is a retarded child molester" is not.

2. No hate speech. Misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic comments are absolutely forbidden, as is racism, antisemitism and Islamophobia.

3. No spam. Obviously. You're not here to sell things. Likewise, if you want to link us to your Wattpad page or somewhere else you've posted your own work, feel free, but doing it over and over again will net you a warning. If people didn't click the first time, they're not going to do it the twenty-fifth time.

4. No trolling. Deliberately starting fights with other posters is not on, and you're expected to treat other members with respect and good manners. This isn't 4Chan. Likewise, if any member of this comm is found to have harassed Paolini or his fans, or anyone else whose writing we criticise here, that member will be immediately banned with no second chances.

5. Keep it relevant. This is more of a general guideline. This is not a comm. for posting your own writing unless it's Inheritance related (such as a short fix-it fic). We're here to discuss and spork bad books, so try to stick to that.

If you want to post your original fics, you're welcome to use our sister site.

True true. Rules are always needed just in case. I am making a site and one of the first things I worked on was some form of rules/guidelines.
Only really seen one conversation that went a little too far on here but everyone seemed to work it out in the end

Thanks for posting this. These were all sort of unwritten guidelines that the group abided by (abode by?) anyway, but it's good to have them clearly defined.

Like most good rulesets, it basically boils down to DBAD: Don't Be A Dick.

Something happened?

Nice!

Are there some rules about sporking fanfictions? I recognized the last fanfiction (I think, if there was one after that I didn't notice it) that was sporked here (the one about Eragon and Arya's Mary Sue daughter) because I am on ff.net myself and I was wondering how does it work?

I suppose that the general rules are still:
- No name of the author
- No link to the fanfiction
- No offense in your review
- No harassment to the author on the site

...I do not have anything specific in mind, but as I write and read there myself and so see a lot of crap I was thinking about making a post about Inheritance Cycle fanfictions as a whole, and for this I may take some quotes from ffs. Just for "scientific examples".

I'm actually really interested in your lyrics rework. A few years asgo I went through and sporked all of his poetry and song scraps that appear in the series, so I'm well aware that you've got your work cut out for you.

Which lyrics are you reworking?

An Addendum to Rule 1: The Grey Areas

The acceptability of statements about an author's character varies circumstantially. Here are three examples.

"Y passage makes X author sound like an asshole."
This is acceptable because it is focused on the failure of the writing. It is a commentary on how the writing reflects poorly on the author, not on any assumption of the author's actual character. For example, Stephenie Meyer's writing makes her sound like a shallow bully full of internalized misogyny.

"X author is a terrible person based on A, B, and C statements of theirs."
This is acceptable because it is based on evidence rather than being a simple personal attack. Authors who say terrible things ought to be called out for it. For example, Orson Scott Card may have written some great books, but he should absolutely be held accountable for his reprehensible homophobic statements.

"X author is a criminal, they were convicted of Z crime and/or there is substantial evidence that they did it."
This is acceptable because the fact that the author committed a crime is either a matter of public record or supported by available evidence. For example, Marion Zimmer Bradley was a pedophile who abused her daughter, and that should absolutely be acknowledged and thoroughly denounced.

Cases where the author was never convicted should still probably have an "allegedly" in there for legal reasons, though. Especially if the person in question has lawyers.

The second I saw the post's title, I thought I'll be in bbbiiiiiggggg trouble. (although, I haven't been active for a while, and I don't remember being rude or acting like a moron to anyone recently. Thank you so much, social anxiety ... )

I would like to thank the mod team for posting this.

Nah, you're good It's not aimed at anyone, and you have rarely if ever done anything against the new rules anyway (which are really just a codification of the unwritten rules by which the group self-governed for a long time both here and back on livejournal)

Sorry. I meant mine since it isn't inheritence related.

Why does rule 5 exist? For some reason, it confuses me. And, I notice posts about original work or requests for feedback anyway. Could someone please explain it?

I want to ask here first. What sort of spork do you accept here? Is fanfiction acceptable?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-05 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw people sporking fanfiction here before, but I want to double check to be sure.

There was one fanfiction that I had my eyes on for a while now. I haven't started yet, but I figured I could give it a shot and see if I can finish the first chapter within a few weeks, then run it through to see if it's acceptable.
