Oh yeah. Shippers pretty much always explicitly don't care about canon or word of author. I don't know if you were there to see it, but when J.K.Rowling outright said in an interview that Draco/Hermione was not going to happen and you'd have to be delusional to think otherwise, a certain subsection of her fanbase went BALLISTIC. Because they apparently thought they knew better than her when it came to her own damn characters. The collective temper tantrum was pretty hilarious to watch. One of them even wrote an open letter to JKR laying out all the "evidence" as to why she was wrong and how she'd ruined the whole series for them. The sheer entitlement of it was unbelievable.
