And now for the written "bonus content"! There's two parts - one of Murtagh and Eragon's "interaction" and then Jeod's letter. I'll post both in their entirety, no summarizing, with commentary. Thanks to Scales for transcribing everything!
Mirror Mirror on the Wall )

And that's it. Nothing fun, nothing new, nothing to really write home about. It sets up for another book, certainly, but there's no real urgency or hook. It's just... there. And that's boring.

About a week ago, the Murtagh Deluxe Edition was released with nary a peep. I literally walked right by the small table the bookstore had put up and was walking out of the store, thinking they didn't have it, when I actually spotted it. I wanted that book for only one thing - the lauded bonus content. Supposedly, the bonus content was "two pieces of original art" by Paolini himself, an "interaction" between Murtagh and Eragon, and a "letter" from Jeod. I went ahead and took that book to a quiet corner and spent about half an hour perusing it so I could share the content. So, first part, pictures!

And here we are, the final chapter of this little novel. This is quite possibly the most infuriating chapter because of the content. I could argue that the ending leaves sequels open to interpretation, but it also still makes it feel like the ending was written with a huge villainous mustache twirl.

To Infinity and Beyond )

In all, I think this book was a waste of time, ink, and paper. It was a cheap way of getting fans excited for something and delivering absolutely nothing. Paolini gave a big middle finger to everyone reading this book with the ending, and gave absolutely nothing in the way of indicating that there was going to be any future stories here. Indeed, the newest novel includes part of this book nearly word for word, just in a different perspective, which is about as cheap as one can get. We got nothing that couldn’t have been posted online as free content. Instead, we had a cash grab that did nothing to enrich the world built by the previous books. We got fan-fiction that we had to pay for. And it wasn’t even good fan-fiction at that.

And here it is. Arguably the longest chapter in this novel, and arguably the most pointless. Nothing happens. Nothing is resolved. The protagonist just takes up space and whines. One character even disappears from the narrative at one point. I'm not sure what the point of this story was, but I find myself wishing it didn't exist. Be warned. It's LONG. Needing two parts long.

Well, we're past the halfway mark with this one. This is the introduction to arguably the longest and most pointless story in this little novella. Wherein Eragon is needlessly dramatic and some people die, but we never knew them, so they just really ended up being cannon fodder that lets Eragon get away with being all philosophical and whiny.

Wherein more questions are generated than answers, and we start to get a conga line of big middle fingers to anyone who actually took the time to read this novel hoping to find anything to sate their curiosity.

And thus the writing debut of Angela Paolini. It's suitably pretentious, suitably Mary-Sue, suitably whiny and bratty and entitled. If you get confused by what she writes here, don't worry. So am I. It almost feels like she wrote fanfiction for herself and forced her brother to put it in a published work just so she could point and say "Me, too!". The only character in this section I feel remotely sorry for is Elva.

Chapter three, and we're back with Eragon, now that he's done spying on a child and his "half-brother". Let's see what he says about this little trip!

The Moral of the Story Is... )

And now for something completely different! No, I'm joking, it's not any different at all! This story is something everyone is quite familiar with, especially since it was used verbatim (just with a different point of view) in the new Brick.

It's here at last. After promising I was going to do it, I've finally did it. The next installment of my commentary sporks, The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm, is now underway! We begin with chapter one, of course, so without further ado....

Now things start to get a little off the rails. Like I said, being older now, I know how bad this chapter is and it makes me wish I had taken a different route.

Chapter Five )
