I decided to have a peek at reddit's science fiction communities , to see what they're saying about To Sleep In A Sea of Stars now that the initial marketing and pre-release hype has died.

It's... mostly not positive. Here's some quotes!

"Paolini is just a dull writer. At best his writing can be inoffensive."

"I agree it feels like a YA novel. I have listened 17h and I am stopping now. It just doesn't get better. Dull, flat, irrational."

"I just finished the slog through the entire book. I wish it got great, but it doesn’t. For a book so long to be worth the time, the story has to be incredible. This just falls flat and feels overworked."

" I'm very into the science part of sci fi and I hate when that stuff gets glossed over or it's wrong."

"It could easily have been a fantasy with magic armor."

"I quit. This book is awful. If you can't make anything exciting happen in your first 400 pages I'm not sticking around for the rest."

"The worst part for me, though, was how bloated the book was. There was probably enough material for a novella, but it just goes on and on and on, which dilutes the overall impact of the story."

"I just didn't buy the plot lines - not the sci-fi but the character interactions felt forced and disconnected, and yeah, a lot of it felt waaay too familiar."

"Kira was like a baby in a adults body who has never experienced human emotion before so had to have basic shit explained to her. It was so weird to me that she was more concerned about ppl finding out she accidentally killed her fiance than that her fiance is dead."

"I can see some sci-fi fans being disappointed with the path this novel takes. The somewhat predictable turns and have-waving science. I can see why it might leave a gap in their metaphorical stomach, not quite enough to fill them up and satisfy their craving. I devoured this book. But I have to admit when I reached the end, I was left...not dissatisfied, just unfulfilled."

"Also, Paolini is a terrible writer, his 'lucky break' in publishing not withstanding. I tried one of his earlier books, I thought it was written by a child then found out it was.."

"holy cow does this book drag on and on and on. Just so much story…. And much of it is uninspired."

"
I am going to finish it at this point as I am on page 750 but wow is this book an exhausting experience."

"There are entire story arcs that are absolutely pointless."

"I think they may be aiming for people who have nostalgia for Eragon. It certainly caused me to be overly forgiving. If I hadn't read Eragon as a kid, I doubt I'd have read TSIASOS, let alone finished it."

Yeah, it's mostly more comments like that. But that's only from three or fours discussions about it, barely anyone is actually talking about it outside of r/fractalverse and r/eragon.
