Bringing Anne Frank/the Holocaust into your book like that is just about the most grotesquely disrespectful and insensitive things you could possibly do as a writer. What, did he think it made the story "deep" and "profound", just as he apparently thought writing about terminal cancer would automatically make the book in general "deep" and "profound"? It just comes off as so much clumsily manipulative swill.
