Not to mention that Gorge's complete lack of Villain Cred would make pretty much any death scene pointless. Hell, Borneheld had more cred than he did. He was the one the characters worried about for the entire second book, and he actually, y'know, did things and was, y'know, competent. Gorge put in a few token appearances in Book 1 and then vanished into the ether, and when he came back it was as an ineffectual little pinhead who had to be bitchslapped around by WoofStar.
Wolfy explains that if it had been Azhure, Everything Would Have Been Lost.
Because as always, everything revolves around the safety of the Author's Favorite Sue, who of course got to sit out of the battle for some contrived reason so she wouldn't have any chance of getting hurt.
Instead the story ends by wrapping up Faraday’s character arc at last, she being the only character in this thing to actually have an arc.
This is probably the reason why Douglass's fans liked her, to be honest... and, considering how much she apparently hated writing legitimate character development, probably why Douglass despised her so much.
