Paolini has repeatedly demonstrated that he has absolutely no sympathy for the handicapped and the mentally ill, intentionally or not, and this is a prime example of it. Elva is in constant mental anguish, but hell if he cares - she's just a freak who needs to step in line and serve the protagonists' interests or else be branded a villain.
