Oh yeah, you can straight-up DIE from pain. That's how the male platypus does people in (yes, over here even the cute little duck beaver is venomous). The sting is so incredibly painful it can send the victim into shock, which in turn can lead to heart failure even in someone who's otherwise healthy.
