Am I the only one disgusted by HOW Eragon "got over" his racism? It's not ERAGON who recognizes that his behavior is bad and apologizes, it's not ERAGON who takes a step toward correcting himself... It's Nar Garzhvog who has to let Eragon VIOLATE HIS MIND so he can see that Urgals are SENTIENT CREATURES DESERVING OF LIFE AND RESPECT. Am I the only one noticing a problem with this? Having the racist one violating the mind of the "noble savage" so the problems HE has with the "lesser race" can be solved? It's not only creepy, but also beyond disrespectful! It's like having a white racist man LOOKING INSIDE THE MIND OF A BLACK MAN to see that yes, black people are people and then having the narration pat him on the back for becoming a better person. I don't really know how to put it in words but... doesn't it sound very, very wrong and racist?
Noble and proud warrior race my ass. Nar Garzhvog should have refused like Murtagh refused to be examinated in the first book. Why should he let some entilted kid (painfully - let's not forget) examine his mind? Why should he sent images of how "human" his race is to Eragon? Also, THIS - GUY - SURVIVED - BEING - MIND - RAPED - AND - MIND - CONTROLLED - BY - A - SHADE. I would expect him being reluctant to have someone else in his mind.
Offering you help to take down a tyrant (sorry Galby, I know you did nothing wrong *hugs Galby*) shouldn't come with lowering yourself and kissing your new allies ass.
Ergy then has a rummage around Nar Gormenghast’s mind, and surprise surprise he learns that he’s totally a Good Guy, with a “regal bloodline”, and also he’s a “brilliant commander” and “as great a thinker and philosopher as Oromis himself” (not much of a compliment, really). But of course he’s also “uneducated”, because, you know, Tribal Warrior Noble Savage Guy.
If this was true, then Nar Garzhvog, "brilliant commander", shouldn't be able to put offer help but still expect respect?
Paolini said that Urgals can be wizar-- sorcer-- CAN DO MAGIC, ok. That's how he tried to explain the plot hole of how they killed Jarnunvosk and all of Galbatorix's friends. I call bullshit, but still... Now, if Urgals can do magic, was it so difficult to have magic-user among Nar Gazhvog's Urgals? An Urgal who could make an oath and have Nar (I won't copy that name again) and his group repeat it?
Couldn't Nar answer something like "No. You freed us, for this we offer our help. We offer our blades. We offer our friendship. We don't offer our minds. Only the Shade ever had them. The Shade took our minds without asking, and this is the only way you can have the mind of an Urgralgra. Will you take our minds, Firesword? Will you pretend everything or accept nothing? We don't offer more that we already did. We have magic. We have promises made with magic. Our sorcerer will make a promise of friendship and we will repeat it, this you can have. Not our minds. Will you still take our minds, Firesword?"
...and have ERAGON SUCK IT. Have the Urgals make a promise and let Eragon deal with his prejudice? Having him make mistakes and disrespect the allies who, in the meantime, had won over the respect of the Vardens? Have ERAGON do the work without people holding his hand and patting him on the back?
