Cloak of Shadows

By Ed Greenwood

Alternate Title: The Second Volume of the Trilogy isn’t Too Late to Start the Actual Plot, Right?

SPORKER: MasterGhandalf

SUMMARY

Elminster and his companions have defeated Manshoon (again) and Elminster himself has gotten his magic back (courtesy of a convenient and literal deus ex machina) but the Time of Troubles continues. Amidst the chaos of gods being cast down and magic running wild, a new (old?) threat rears its head. Dhalgrave, lord of the Shadowmasters, the shapeshifting Malaugrym, has put a price on Elminster’s head, and how his followers are falling over themselves to fulfil it (and proving that suicidal overconfidence isn’t just a trait of Greenwood’s human villains). Meanwhile, the Malaugrym wizard Milhvar has created an enchanted cloak that (supposedly) renders the Malaugrym undetectable by magical means. In the end, it will fall to Sharantyr, Belkram and Itharr to take the fight to the Shadowmasters, while Elminster… flies around doing a bunch of other stuff, mostly. All of which would be much more exciting if Greenwood could finally learn how to string a damned story together. But, alas, some things never change.
