Hello! We are Mara and Dienne. Or really, it's just Dienne, but because we work together, and half the opinion's are Mara's, we're going to share. :) Mara is my friend with whom I discuss a lot things with, mostly about The Inheritance Bricks and Paolini and other things that happen to catch our fancy, like video games, movies and tv shows, and other books. So, we've been batting back and forth a commentary for all four books for a while. Anyway, we're happy to be here officially! (Dienne, at least, has been lurking for a while and has been telling Mara about the site and other things she's read on here that we find amazing and hilarious) And we're also looking forward to showing you our work so far!

So, to set this up, Mara and I started a little over a year ago to reread the Inheritance books and discuss them. It was mostly because I was like "I want to rewrite this into a version I can tolerate" and Mara encouraged me to do it. Therefore, we've spent our leisure time discussing the things we've discovered while reading these books, and it's turned into a chapter by chapter, paragraph by paragraph, commentary. Now, the commentary is pure opinion. It is in no way shape or form meant to deride, belittle, or make fun of the author. I will be the first to step forward and admit that I absolutely love the story of the Inheritance Cycle. It's one of my favorite stories. I just greatly dislike the way it's written. Had it been in anyone else's hands (well, maybe not anyone else) it likely could've been an extremely enjoyable read. Since it wasn't, and isn't, our commentary goes over the things we've found interesting, stupid, flawed, and ridiculous.

So without further ado...

Everyone, please enjoy Mara and Dienne's commentary of the Blue Brick, Book One, also known as Eragon.

The commentary will be colored blue, just to differentiate it from the actual text.

Are you ready for this? )

Edit: I'm not entirely sure why there are two different blues, but I guess it works? And I also don't know what tags to give this.

I'm new to the internet and just posted something on Alternatehistory.com. Dear God, never again. I would like to thank the moderators and community for making this a polite respectful place. I have read a lot of sporks but no one has ever called out Paolini on Angela. First unless she is a Anglo-Greco lass... I am not even going to get started on Paolini's non existent language skills. Rip off Patricia Wrede much, Paolini? If I still had my Dealing with Dragons series I could probably prove you ripped Morwen off word for word. Renaming Amberglas (from the seven towers)Angela and making her stupid and obnoxious is not original or homage. It is plagiarism. Comparison in the comment section.

All Hail Jabootu, god of bad movies! I've been a fan of this site for years, and though they only deal in bad movies rather than bad books there are definitely some common threads. For one thing, check out this list of cliches/common criticisms and see how many apply to the Cycle! Or bad novels in general, really.

We're all a very diverse group here, and I notice that some of you were former fans. How did you guys find antishurtugal? I'll go first. I went on swankivy's website and found her rants page. I was wondering what was so special about Eragon, as I had read it a year ago and had mostly forgotten about it, so I looked at her essay. I was shocked at the way Paolini got published, and at the many flaws in the writing. I read the rest of her essays, and found the antishurtugal LJ page when she mentioned it. From there, I found the dreamwidth page because someone linked it in the commments. The rest is history.
