Where the Heart of Anti-Shurtugal Rises Again.

It seems that of late, my muse only sings of discord, so here's yet another chapter of Discordant. There's a lot of travel in this one, and a lot of dialogue, but I think it all serves a purpose.

One of the highlights of this chapter for me was writing Rivkah. In canon, she starts off relatively sympathetic, but takes a sharp curve into left field somewhere near the end of Enchanter. It was good to divert her from that and see who she truly was under all the Icarii brainwashing.

Unlike the last two chapters, this one doesn't really mesh in with a canon chapter, so I can't really link an Epistler spork for extra context. It pretty much stands on its own. Canon will eventually link back up with us, but for now, let's enjoy the break, shall we?

I was hoping to get the next chapter of Consequence done before this so that I could get a nice alternating schedule going, but inspiration is a fickle beast, and ideas for Discordant wouldn't leave my head. So, here's Part Two. It's longer than Part One, and features more ways for me to use the horror skills I developed during my teenage "trying to be Stephen King" phase.

The more I write Discordant, the more I realize how much darker it is than Consequence. There are moments of uplift, though, and hopefully they make the dark stuff worth getting through.

Several of the exchanges between canon characters include lines directly pulled from the canon chapter. If you want extra context, then Epistler's sporking of that chapter can be found here.

So, now that we've got the new comm up and running... why not introduce something new?

That's right, friends, I'm writing another spitefic! I'll be writing it at the same time as I work on Consequence and my other projects, the better to make sure I've always got something to do when the dreaded Writer's Block strikes me on one of them.

Discordant, as I've chosen to call it, is a lot more... "fanficcy" than Consequence in that it doesn't pick up where the canon story left off, but actually begins in the middle of canon and starts interrupting the events as set down by the author. This is largely because while the Inheritance Cycle is certainly bad, it isn't nearly as suspension-of-disbelief-shattering as all the horrifying and unrealistic shit that goes down in Douglass's work. Aaaand I also kind of wanted to have the main character get to see some of Axis's worst atrocities from Enchanter, such as the slaughter of Borneheld... which will get a much more realistic reaction in Discordant than it did in Douglass's messed-up canon.

The story begins in the middle of Enchanter, specifically at the point where Axis crucifies Burdel and his sons without a trial. It focuses on Avelyn, one of StarDrifter's other bastard children (what, you thought he'd only have two despite trying to seduce and/or rape anyone with a vagina?), as she infiltrates Axis's army in the hopes of bringing it down from within. Along the way she discovers her own magical gifts, struggles with a crisis of her faith in Artor, and remains steadfast in her choice to be human regardless of what blood runs in her veins.

Also, there will be some twisting of canon characters into something more realistic, Faraday will get to do things that aren't stupid and/or undermined by an author who hates her, and Axis and Azhure will probably die horribly.
